In a bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, sugar, and vanilla essence until the sugar dissolves. Set aside.
Step 2In a small bowl, mix warm water, 1 tsp sugar, and yeast. Cover and let it rest for 10 minutes until foamy.
Step 3In a large bowl, add flour and butter. Rub the butter into the flour with your fingers until crumbly.
Step 4Add the yeast mixture and the egg mixture into the flour. Mix well until a soft dough forms.
Step 5Transfer to a floured counter and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Step 6Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Step 7Once risen, divide the dough into small balls or desired shapes.
Step 8Heat oil in a deep pan over medium flame. Fry the dough balls in batches until golden brown on all sides.
Step 9Remove and place on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
Step 10Serve warm – you can dust with powdered sugar, drizzle with honey, or enjoy plain.
