Homemade Shawarma

Homemade Shawarma is a delicious Middle Eastern street food recipe that has become one of the most loved fast foods in Pakistan and around the world. This flavorful dish is made with tender marinated chicken strips, wrapped in soft pita bread, naan, or roll paratha, and topped with creamy white garlic sauce, spicy red sauce, and crunchy fresh salad.

Step by step method
Step 1

Marinate the Chicken: In a mixing bowl, add chicken strips. Add yogurt, ginger garlic paste, garam masala, lemon juice, red chilli powder, salt, black pepper, and tikka masala. Mix well until chicken is fully coated. Cover and marinate for 15 minutes.

Step 2

Cook the Chicken : Heat a little oil in a pan. Add the marinated chicken and cook on medium flame. Stir occasionally until chicken is tender and fully cooked. Set aside.

Step 3

Prepare White Sauce: In a blender, add garlic, oil, vinegar, lemon juice, salt, black pepper, oregano, onion, and sesame seeds. Blend to make a smooth paste. Mix in mayonnaise and yogurt (2?3 tbsp). Keep refrigerated until use.

Step 4

Prepare Red Sauce: Chilli flakes with 3 tbsp water for 5 minutes, then let it cool. In a blender, add chilli flakes, salt, oil, vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, and onion. Blend to make a smooth sauce.

Step 5

Assemble Shawarma: Warm the pita bread or roll paratha. Spread a layer of white sauce. Add cooked chicken strips. Top with fresh salad (cabbage, cucumber, or capsicum). Drizzle red sauce on top. Roll tightly and serve hot.

Tips & variations
  • You can also use paprika instead of chili flakes. It gives a beautiful color to the sauce while reducing the spiciness.
  • Tip Make Ahead: Both sauces can be prepared in advance and stored in the fridge for 2?3 days.
  • Cheese Twist: For a fusion style shawarma, you can add a little mozzarella or cheddar cheese inside before rolling.
